In this two part training you will explore how to develop children’s reading comprehension skills and strategies, with an emphasis on drawing inferences: conclusions based on evidence and reasoning. The training will explore effective teaching approaches in reading, unpicking the differences between whole class and guided reading.

The first session will focus on what is effective pedagogy in teaching reading and the reasons why some children can read accurately, but have difficulty understanding texts.
The second session will explore some teaching approaches that focus on developing children’s abilities to make inferences when reading independently, including the strategies that are taught in Reciprocal Teaching and suggestions for how to incorporate this approach into guided reading.
